Czech verbs denoting a change of possession are analyzed within the framework of Functional Generative Description according to the number of cognitive participants of the situation and the number of their valency counterparts (mapping of the cognitive participants to the valency slots and their respective morphemic expressions). They constitute five subgroups, which are described by the form of their particular valency frames (inner participants as elements of the underlying structure and their morphemic expressions).
It is argued here that within this group of verbs the ambiguous prepositional group za + Accusative fills the valency slot only with the verbs denoting an exchange of two objects/entities between two possessor (see 2A) or initiated by a person caused an exchange (see 2B).
