Abstract

Dental caries recently affects about 50 % of childen. It is infectious, multifactorial disease where the main aetiological factors are oral bacteria, sugars in diet, the amout and quality of saliva and poor oral hygiene.

Early establishment of risk factors can prevent the caries development. One of the risk factor is higher amount of cariogenic bacteria in oral cavity.

The microbial colonization can be detected using some comercially available tests for evaluation of saliva. Caries risk identification helps to implement the preventive methods for improvement of oral health in children.
