Abstract

Xie Lingyun (385-443) is generally regarded as the creator of the new genre in China of nature poetry. Critical discourse on his poetry is mostly dealing with its philosphical and religious background and is based mostly on Xie´s lyrical poems.

This article is primarily interested in the emergence of aesthetic appreciation of nature and it bases its arguments on Xie´s long autobioraphical Rhapsody on living in the mountains (Shanju fu).
