Abstract
The conference discussed recent development in studies of the idea of rise of modernity in China. An interdisciplinary approach was adopted, touching on issues of Ming, Qing and early Republican history (history of institutions, urban history, history of material culture and art, history of science and thought), Chinese literature and linguistic.
