Abstract
The article discusses ambiguous literary representations of Brittany and the Bretons in French literature of the nineteenth century (Michelet, Chateaubriand, Balzac, Hugo, Renan).It compares parallels images of Celtic origins, medieval barbarism and ideological resistance. It points out certain literary clichés (Republican or Royalist myths).
