Calciphylaxis - a case report and review of the topic

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2009

Abstract

Calcifylaxis is a rare but dangerous disease in patients with chornic kidney failure. It is characterized by high morbidity and mortality.

Pathogenesis is not fully elucidated and therefore, therapeutic approach is sometimes empirical. Despite therapy, mortality reaches up to 80% in maintenance dialysis patients.

Of great importance is to recognize accociated hyperparathyroidism or, in the contrary, in some cases concomitant hypoparathyroidism with adynamic bone. Rigorous and well-timed control of calcium-phosphate metabolism using non-calcium and non-aluminium based phosphate binders together with therapy of hyperparathyridism either by parathyreoidectomy or in selected cases by calcimimetics may lead to diminished occurence of this severe disorder.
