Abstract

Persistent infection by certain oncogenic HPV types is firmly established as the necessary cause of premalignant and malignant epithelial lesions of the uterine cervix. Vaccines against the high risk HPV types 16 and 18 represents the fiirst preventive vaccines developed to protect against cervical cancer.

Vaccination does not replace routine cervical cancer screening with PAP smear.
