Abstract

A chapter in a textbook 'Clinical transplantology'. The topic is dialysis therapy of chronic renal failure in patients awaiting kidney transplantation.

Basic principles of extracorporeal elimination (difusion, convection, ultrafiltration) together with principles of integrated dialysis-transplantation care are described. Also main complications of chronic renal failure (namely cardiovascular, infectious and associated with disturbed calcium and phosphate homeostasis) are mentioned, including pharmacological principles and interpretation of laboratory results.
