Abstract
The paper summons up the terminological problems of Medieval Illumination and illustrates the use of the terminology on the examples of acanthus ornamentation (ranged chronologically). The relationship to the transformations of the manuscript painting in the Western Europe, Central Europe and Byzantium is taken into consideration.
