Transformations of the Motif of Ban Jieyu in Chinese literature from Han to Tang

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2005

Abstract

The paper examins the motif of Ban Jieyu as a prototype of the 'abandoned palace lady' motif popular in early medieval an Tang dynasty Chinese poetry. Comparison of the historical sources from the Han dynasty with their later interperetation in the medium of lyrical poetry reveals the changing image of woman as well the mechanisms of intertextual relations in Chinese literature of the given period.
