Pain in newborns

Abstract

This review attempts to specify the pain in term and preterm newborn. The study characterizes physiology and pathophysiology of pain in newborn.

It gives attention to development of painful stimulus conduction from peripheral nerves throught spinal cord up to supraspinal centres. The study reminds of long negative pain effects experienced by term and preterm newborn in their early life, especially during ICU hospitalization, for further development of the child.

It summarized typical markers used for pain detection in newborn and gives survey of 16 methods, which are verfied for pain diagnosis in term and preterm newborn in the world. Next part of the study pays attention to ethic and practical problems, with which research of pain in newborn struggles.
