Renal artery stenosis of renal artery may cause or deteriorate hypertension or renal insufficiency. Not even one year after the first coronary angioplasties, in the year 1978, Felix Mahler and Andreas Grüntzig performed the first renal angioplasties.
These were later, similarly as coronary interventions, completed by stenting in most of the patients. Though there are not randomized studies, it was proven that stenting of significant stenosis of renal arteries influences hypertension, the occurrence of renal insufficiency and hypertrophy of the left ventricle (1).
