Cardiac valve repair. Heart valve disease can be treated either by valve replacement or by a valve sparing procedure (valve repair).
In valve-sparing surgery commissurotomy, commissuroplasty, annuloplasty or various reconstructive procedures may be employed to restore the function of stenotic or incompetent heart valves. In adult patients heart valve repair is usually feasible in case of mitral incompetency and almost always in secondary tricuspid incompetency.
