The problems of pneumococcal meningitis are briefly outlined and the possibilities of contemporary diagnostics are presented in the case of a 4-month old infant hospitalized in the University Hospital in Hradec Králové. In relation to the therapy, the necessity of appropriate antibiotic treatment for these severe diseases according to the actual epidemiological situation is emphasized.
The development of conjugated pneumococcal vaccines should change the so far adverse state of incidence of these diseases in the future, and influence the increasing number of pneumococci resistant to betalactamic antibiotics.
