Abstract

It is a therapeutic method for renal failure, which uses one?s own peritoneum as a membrane for blood clean-up. Peritoneum covers not only the walls of abdominal cavity, but all the organs inside the abdominal cavity, which increases its effective surface.

The principle of peritoneal dialysis (PD) is exchange of substances between blood and peritoneal dialysis solution. Abdominal cavity is during PD filled through catheter tightly attached via net of capillaries to peritoneum by sterile dialysis solution.

Into this solution various catabolites of metabolism and also excess liquid diffuse through the net of capillaries on peritoneum according to concentration gradient. This solution is in regular intervals, most frequently four times a day, changed and renewed.
