Myocardial Performance Index in Children with Ventricular Septal Defect

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2004

Abstract

The echocardiographic myocardial performance index as described by Tei has been previously shown to be useful in assessment of myocardial function in children with congenital heart defects. Authors established normal values for index of myocardial performance for right and left ventricles in 60 children with innocent murmurs, before assessing 25 patients with ventricular septal defect.

Changes of the left and right ventricular myocardial function, as assessed by the moycardial performance index, may be present in the majority of children with ventricular septal defects. Standard antifailure treatment with diuretics does not influence this incidence of abnormal myocardial function.
