Abstract
Cough is a paroxysmal loud expiration maneuver and the most frequent sign of respiratory diseases. It is a reflexive action that can be both defensive and pathologic.
The defensive reflex is mostly due to mechanical or chemical irritation of the airway receptors´ mucous membranes. The character of the cough may suggest which part of the airways is affected and what may be the cause of it.
