Abstract

The aim of the pilot study was to find out the influence of hormonal substitution therapy on the development of multiple sclerosis in women after menopause. In our set of 16 patients with the coincidence of MS and climacteric syndrome, the therapeutic response was assessed after a year of treatment with regard to improvement in clinical global impression (CGI) and by means of a questionnaire EDSS (Expanded Disability Status Scale).

In no patient was a worsening of the condition noticed, while 60% had improved a lot, 20% negligibly and 20% showed no change. A significant influence on EDSS was not proven.

Starting treatment early improves significantly the quality of life and sometimes favorably improves the course of the disease.
