Abstract

The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) represents an effective and up-to-date widespread method of the symptomatic treatment of portal hypertension. This method allows bridging of a long-lasting period between the first clinical symptoms and possible causal therapy, which is the liver transplantation in the case of liver cirrhosis.

TIPS in syndrome of acute portal hypertension (the Budd-Chiari sy) enables to survive the first critical weeks of disease. TIPS prevents the patients with portal hypertension from severe (life threatening) complications (the oesophageal varices bleeding, ascites) for a long time.
