Though we treated 12 hip joints in 11 patients by the Steel technique of triple osteotomy of the innominate bone, only two boys and one girl of them had multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. The average age at the time of operation was 7.5 yrs (range 6.5 to 8.5).
Methods. Evaluation according to Merle d'Aubigne and Postel was made on X-ray films before and after surgery.
Average follow-up 2 years (range 17 to 29 mts). Results.
The average achieved score was 17.5 points (maximum is 18 points), so all hips showed excellent clinical outcomes. Improvement in Wiberg's CE angle from 15° to 44° (range: 10 to 25° and 41 to 48°, respectively), average increase by 29° (range 21 to 33°).
Conclusions. The Steel triple osteotomy of the innominate bone permits correction of abnormal anatomical conditions of hip joints in severe multiple epiphyseal dysplasia.
