Abstract

Medical progress is based on research which ultimatively rest in part on experiments involving human subjects. This paper describes principal issues of the Informed Consent (IC) and its role in clinical research.

The Czech legislation related to IC is listed. The controversial issue of the capacity of people suffering from schizophrenia and dementia to provide IC to participate in research is discussed.
