The possibility of prevention of venous thromboembolism in psychiatric patients

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |

Abstract

The risk of pathological blood clotting in psychiatric patients, especially under antipsychotic treatment, does exist. An algorithm of venous thromboembolism prevention has been established.

Common risk factors of vein thrombosis (history of thromboembolic disease, immobilization, cancer, age over 75 years etc.) and also possible risk factors of vein thrombosis in psychiatric inpatients with movement restriction (restraint, dehydration, obesity, antipsychotic treatment) have been included.
