Aspects of protein and amino acid metabolism in a model of severe glutamine deficiency in sepsis

Abstract

Cecal ligation and puncture resulted in severe septic state with decreased protein synthesis, increased protein breakdown and leucine oxidation. Growth hormone administration did not influence these parameters in septic animals.

Alanyl-glutamine prevented a decrease in muscle glutamine, decreased leucine oxidation in both sham-operated and septic rats, and had no effect on protein synthesis and breakdown.
