Abstract

There is the risk of a pathological blood clotting event in psych. pat.,especially those treated with antipsychotics. Although it is not high,it can have fatal consequences when combined with a relatively frequent pulmonary embolism and difficult dg.of thromboembolism. An algorithm for thromboembolism prevention has been developed. It involves important general risk factors of venous thrombosis and also markers that can participate in the pathogenesis of venous thrombosis in the hospitalized psych. pat.with limited motility. The risk of pathological blood clotting in psych.pat., especially under antipsychotic treatment, does exist.

We suggest an algorithm of prevention of a venous thromboembolism in mentally ill people. We concidered common risk factors of vein thrombosis as a history of thromboembolic disease, immobilization, cancer,or age over 75 years, and specific risk factors of vein throbosis in psych.in-pat.as a physical restraint, catatonic syndrome, dehydration, obesity,or antipsychotic treatment.
