Abstract

Purpose: To assess posterior capsule opacification (PCO) incidence and to evaluate its influence on best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in patients who had the intraocular lens (IOL) Acrysof MA30BA or MA60BM implanted in their one or both eyes. Al patients included in the study were operated on cataract at Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital, Hradec Králové in 1998.

Methods. 25 patients (35 eyes) were included in this study. Their ages ranged from 20 to 78 years (mean 54,5).

A special software program, EPCO 2000 was used for the semiobjective assessment of PCO in 25 eyes that did not require Nd:YAG capsulotomy. We evaluate the PCO index within total IOL border and the PCO index within 3 mm central circle.

The PCO was graded 0-4 according to perceived density. According to our experience Acrysof IOLs provide very good long term results with low PCO rate.
