In East-Bohemian region during 5 years period (2002-2006) 50 049 newborns received BCG vaccination - danish BCG vaccine SSI. In this period specific regional lymphadenitis after BCG vaccination in 119 babies was diagnosed and treated in the pediatric pneumological clinic, University Hospital in Hradec Králové.
Incidence of lymphadenopathy was 2.38 per 1000 vaccinated babies. No severe immunodeficiency was observed in affected children.
No other severe BCG complications (osteomyelitis, generalization) were found. Increase of the BCG lymphadenitis incidence is doubtless related to changing of BCG vaccine Behring to SSI.
Well-timed punctures and, if necessary, exstirpation of lymphonodes is the best of treatment. Incision is inadvisable because of a high risk of fistula development.
