Abstract

In the beginning of the 1240s conquered Prince of Novgorod Alexander Nevskiy western invaders twice. In 1240 he beat the Swedes on Neva and in 1242 the Teutonic Knights in the Battle of the Ice at Lake Peipus.

Russian historiography describes these events traditionally as defence of Rus’ against aggression from the catholic West aiming at conquesting the country and catholicising the orthodox Russians. Contemporary historians come to the more prosaic conclusion that these were only a part of broader border conflicts.
