2005

Abstract

The main part of the study consists of the list of 172 scientists, who stayed in Poděbrady in 1924-1942 and 1945-1947, some of them almost every year. The primary source for this study were registries of the spa guests, the secondary was the correspondence, stored in personal papers of scientists in the Archives of the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic.

The Czech clientele was prewailing - the spa in Poděbrady put an emphasis on its Czech or even slavic character. When it comes to foreign guests, Ukrainian and Russian emigrants were the most frequent visitors.

The main reasons for a stay in Poděbrady were medical problems, especially heart diseases. Despite this fact, it is possible to track social and work aspects in the quests´ personal schedule: They worked on their publications in Poděbrady and often were visited by their colleages.
