New nomenclature of lower limb veins

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Arts |
2009

Abstract

Three important changes have appeared in the area of the lower limb veins concerning the anatomical nomenclatures within last ten years. In 1998 a last version of the Latin anatomical nomenclature, Terminologia Anatomica, was published.

In 2001, during the 14th World Congress of the International Union of Phlebology, a consensus document reflecting clinicians' requests of new terms and replacing several insufficient ones was accepted. Some further changes have been performed, concerning above all veins of pelvis, during 21st World Congress of the International Union of Angiology.

Totally, 36 new terms have been added in both Latin and English languages. Eponyms are not equal synonyms and moreover only three of them have been recommend for general usage.

Both these consensus documents will be incorporated in the next version of the Terminologia Anatomica
