By coincidence, by the end of WWW I, Czechoslovak legions were formed in Russia, and they had to undertake the difficult journey from European Russia to Vladivostok. While Czechoslovak soldiers were concentrating on returning home to the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic, Japanese Army command and White Russian Guards under the command of Kolchak or Semyonov, supported by western Allies, were trying to use Czechoslovak legions as military barrier between Red Army west of Baykal Sea and Japanese expeditionary forces occupying Vladivostok and Eastern Siberia.
The focus of military and economical interests on Russian and Japanese forces’ part was the East China Railway controlled mainly by Czechoslovak legionnaires. For this reason, the evacuation of Czechoslovak train transports was being deliberately delayed and blocked as much as possible.
There occurred numerous skirmishes and incidents between the forces involved. The gravest incident took place in Khailar railway depot in Northen Manchuria.
